Winter hike on Penyagolosa in Spain

Penyagolosa is the second highest mountain in the Valencian Community. This symbolic mountain in the province of Castellón stands out for its isolated nature. It is easily recognizable by its distinct features: one side has a clear slope, while the other is much steeper. We chose the route along the slope, as we were pressed for time on this occasion.

We set out from Valencia to the town of Vistabella, which sits at about 1200 meters above sea level. The journey uphill was long and winding. We traveled a short distance to the San Joan de Penyagolosa monastery to begin our hike. The first part of our trail took us along a wide gravel road surrounded by trees. Gradually, we gained altitude, and after just under two hours and a little over 4 kilometers, we reached the summit.
